FAQ’s about therapy from a Clinical Psychologist
I want to find a therapist near to me. Can you help?
We offer high quality and encrypted video consultations so you can make an appointment from anywhere in Australia and it seamlessly fits into your lifestyle. We also have light filled and elegantly furnished consulting rooms in Armadale and Beaumaris. We’ve created a therapeutic space that promotes healing and comfort.
What happens in the first session?
The first session is all about understanding what has brought you to therapy and what your concerns are. Your Psychologist will ask a few questions about your current concerns and what you are hoping to achieve. We may ask some specific questions about symptoms and how long you have had these symptoms. It can help to talk a little about your family as well as experiences that you have had growing up. All these questions help us to understand you and help us to design the type of therapy that will suit you.
Will you make me face my fears?
This is a common question when you are thinking about getting help for anxiety. One of the key parts of therapy is collaboration. Every step of the way will be a collaboration between you and your Psychologist. To begin you will learn about anxiety and how it affects you, and the strategies to reduce the feelings of anxiety. Then you will gradually work towards being able to cope really well with more difficult situations.
Can I continue to take medication when I’m attending therapy?
We work with you and your prescribing doctor to help develop a treatment plan that will lead to success in managing anxiety or alleviating depression. It is important that you discuss with your doctor the best plan for medication.
How long will it take for positive changes?
It makes sense that you would like a time frame for how long before you feel relief from depression or anxiety. The time frame can differ depending on how long you have been experiencing symptoms, the strategies you have been using to cope, and the medications you may be taking. Anxiety reduction and mood improvement tends to be experienced in stages. Many people experience relief in the first couple of sessions and gradually sustain improvement over months. It is important to keep in mind that your Psychologist will work with you to develop the treatment pathway that best suits you.
